Day 8869 - Idea

So, after a long an arduous day at this lucrative business we call college, I have nothing inspiring to reflect upon in regards to my day-happenings... But I can reflect upon this:

Dr Horrible. Love it. Hated it in a hipster kinda way to begin with, but now that I am immersed in theatre and Music, I love it. To most of you, this is not news, but I still have to take the time to reflect and explain. I think my  fantastic mother put it into concrete words which made sense of my theoretic nonsense gibberish you all know as my perspective...

It is a story about a young and naive teenager fighting for recognition. A social underdog turning desires into inner turmoil and eventually into hate. It's about "the one that got away", and the douchebag who used them without understanding their true beauty. And because of this story and theme which I believe nearly everyone can relate to, I need to reproduce it and let people see it the way I do. What better time than now, what better place then here?

So, that being said, I am placing my name in the random hat that is "Ottawa Fringe". There will be no poultry mathematics, I understand the concept of a draw. I just need to challenge myself, and this is how. I found out recently that for a show of this scale, Mr Whedon will not charge for the rights, so why the freek not!

Now I have a great play to "cover" and a perspective to imply. But I need more... A twist. The idea I had was to take teenage angst a little further, and market the show to a target audience, particularly Fringe goers... And I realize that the 2 bird 1 stone theory led me to one conclusion: The story must be one of coming out, constantly confronting boundaries, and being self-conscious of every interpretation. This play could be transformed beautifully into a satirical gay comedy. Now, before I get a rush of objections, hear me out: I understand that the brunt of the humour cannot be focused on homosexuality, but it must be the focus and add to the conflicting nature of a struggling teenager.

I already have a wonderful stage manager who has offered her services, and I have full confidence in her abilities. I also have someone who will help oversee the "publicity and production" aspect of the show, but I need a lot more... I need talented musicians, devoted actors (seriously, this is a strong time commitment), a dance choreographer, a dance choreographer, among other roles to fill. And I need input, insight and ideas!

If any of you reading this are in Ottawa, interested in putting in a serious amount of hours for little to no pay and a phenomenal experience, please let me know. We need you.

Also, feel free to post any comments/questions/suggestions... This feels like a good idea, but different perspectives will give me a better understanding of the big picture, and all opinions are valued and appreciated.

Goodnight!
